Summary & Thanks!

On the evening of Sunday, October 26, Coulter Library hosted its second Library “After Hours” event. The initial inspiration for this type of event came from watching a video summary of Syracuse University Library’s Lock-In. It became a reality due to my membership last year in one of Dr. Sydow’s presidential initiatives, the Horizon Leadership program.

The event consisted of the following activities/stations:

  • Scavenger Hunt (history component created by Tara Ross)
  • Grocery Bingo
  • The Music of Mark Zane
  • Refrigerator Poetry Remix with Jamie Sindell
  • News Jeopardy with Laurel Saiz
  • Not so Trivial, Presidential Trivia with Nina Tamrowski
  • SuperMix Live Broadcast
  • Board Game Demos led by “Play the Game, Read the Story” Game Store
  • Onondaga Free Library Information table
  • Onondaga County Health Department Information table
  • Literary Society Information table
  • Wheel of Coulter
  • Video Game Demos
  • Book Bowling

We had approximately 80 attendees. The attendees included staff, students, and community members. Our initial review of the evaluation forms indicates attendees had a good time. An overwhelming majority stated they would attend another event like this in the future. Photos available here: http://library.sunyocc.edu/news/events/afterhours/oct2608/

To launch an event of this scale requires an incredible amount of work and coordination. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the various departments, individuals, and local establishments that were instrumental to the success of this event.

Donations: Thanks to all staff and students who donated items to Interfaith Works and the Syracuse City School District. We collected numerous items (school supplies, kitchen utensils, and personal care products) before and after the event. The items donated will benefit refugee families. One student asked about the agency aiding the refugees because he wanted to help them. He is an ESL mentor here at OCC to a “lost boy” from the Sudan and has learned of their hardships. Special thanks to Connie D’Accurzio and Gerry Wright for coordinating this donation effort and Gloria Heffernan for her guidance and providing an alternative donation drop off location.

Library After Hours Planning Committee: Nadia Tressler, Vi Marcy, Tracey Mead, Marta Loomis, Rob O’Boyle, Gerry Wright, Connie D’Accurzio, Tara Ross, Dave Durfey, Katharine Posner (SU student intern).

Event Volunteers: Gail Smorol, Cathy Bauer, Colleen Vaughan, Liz Marcy, David Marcy, Carmen Noval, Danielle Cross, Jerry Farnett, Barb Steitz, Laurel Saiz, Jamie Sindell, Mark Zane, Tara Ross, Nina Tamrowski (and her kids), Ryan Murphy, Anna Propp, Susan Morgan, Holly Hart, Mary Lou Schweizer, Rich Hildebrandt (OCC student), Martha Strunk (OCC Student), Ashraf Khater (OCC student), Sarah McMichaels (OCC student), James McCambell(OCC student), Jason Smith (OCC student), David Scrudo (OCC student), Laura Deal (SU student), Anna Call (SU student), Wenli Gao (SU student), the SuperMix student crew led by Patrick Nelson and Brandon Caswell, and last but not least Monty Flynn and his staff for working with Damian Boehlert to provide refreshments.

Behind the Scenes: Student Association, Custodial Staff led by Steve Simmons, AV Department, Academic Computing Center, Grounds, Event Planning, Residence Life, Public Affairs, Campus Safety, Facilities, Dining Center, Human Resources, Art Club students, and of course the Library Department as a whole.

Event Donors: OCC Student Association, OCC Foundation, OCC Human Resources, OCCFTA, OCC Bookstore, OCC Dining Center, OCC Public Affairs, OCC Lazers – Women’s Tennis Team, “Play the Game, Read the Story”, Syracuse Crunch Hockey, National Baseball Hall of Fame, Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Beak & Skiff Apple Farms, Panera Bread, Fuccillo Hyundai of Syracuse, Rodale Inc., Syracuse ISP Sports Network, Brooklyn Pickle, Deli on the Hill, Hoffman’s Sausage Company, Terrell’s Potato Chip Company, Price Chopper, Laci’s Burger Joint, MOST, Citadel Broadcasting, 93Q Ted & Amy, Pepsi, and several members of the library staff.

I hope I haven’t left anyone out. We hope to host this kind of event again. If you are interested in participating in our next event please let me know and we will be sure to contact you when we begin planning.
